On 19 July 1963, E. Stanley Crawford and Domingo Liotta implanted the primary scientific Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, in a patient who had a cardiac arrest after surgical operation. The patient survived for 4 days below mechanical support however did no longer get over the complications of the cardiac arrest; sooner or later, the pump became discontinued, and the patient died.
