Fatty acid synthesis begins with acetyl-CoA and builds up by means of the addition of two-carbon units. Fatty acid synthesis occurs in the cytoplasm of cells while oxidative degradation takes place in the mitochondria. Many of the enzymes for the fatty acid synthesis are prepared into a multienzyme complex known as fatty acid synthase. The essential websites of fatty acid synthesis are adipose tissue and the liver.
