Advancements in bioengineering strategies in the decade after Matsumara’s work have caused stepped forward membranes and hepatocyte attachment systems. As time has improved the sources of hepatocytes have expanded. Cell sources now include primary porcine hepatocytes, primary human hepatocytes, human hepatoblastoma (C3A), immortalized human cellular lines and stem cells.
